Hello everyone, this is Sushi Hatake!
Today, I’d like to write for those of you who host home parties and gatherings at your place.
Always Stuck With the Same Two Choices?
When you invite friends or family over for a party at home, the food options usually come down to two choices:
1. Cook it yourself
→ You spend all day preparing, and on the day of the party, you’re running around the kitchen. No time to actually enjoy your guests’ company.
2. Order delivery or takeout
→ Easy, but it’s pizza again. Same as always. Nothing special.
Either way, there’s always that feeling of compromise.
Sound familiar?
The Problem: The Host Can’t Actually Be a Host
When you cook everything yourself, you’re trapped in prep, cooking, plating, and cleanup.
Your friends are here, but you’re stuck in the kitchen. You can’t join the conversation. You’re not even in the photos.
This is actually a really common complaint.
You want to “host” your guests, but you end up just “working.”
Delivery makes things easier, but it doesn’t make the occasion special. The same familiar food shows up on the table, just like every other time.
A Third Option — The Chef Comes to You
Here’s an option many people don’t know about:
A sushi chef comes to your home and makes sushi right in front of you.
It’s called “mobile sushi catering” or “private sushi chef service.”
This means:
- No prep or cooking for the host
- You can sit at the table with your guests
- Watching sushi being made becomes entertainment
- The chef handles cleanup too
You get to be a great host AND enjoy the party yourself.
A Birthday Party Story
A while back, I received a request from a woman in her 30s.
She wanted to throw a birthday party for her husband at home with some friends. But with a small child to look after, she didn’t have time to spend hours cooking.
On the day, we set up a simple space in a corner of the living room, and I started making sushi there.
At first, the guests were taking photos saying “Wow!” But soon, they started chatting with me.
“Where is this fish from?”
“Is there anything kids can eat?”
Before long, natural conversations were flowing around the sushi.
The host stayed at the table with her guests from start to finish. She told me afterward, “The best part was that I actually got to enjoy it too.”
Perfect For:
- Birthday parties (adults and kids)
- Small reunions with old friends
- Anniversary celebrations (wedding anniversaries, 60th birthdays, etc.)
- Year-end or New Year family gatherings
- Get-togethers with parent friends
- Entertaining international guests (English available)
On the other hand, if you’re hosting more than 10 people or just want to keep costs as low as possible, other options might be a better fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are the questions I get most often from people considering this for a home party.
Q. Can you really come to my home?
Yes, absolutely. Apartments, houses — it doesn’t matter. All I need is about one table’s worth of space and access to running water. No special equipment required.
Q. What’s the minimum number of guests?
We can accommodate groups as small as 4 people. Even a small family gathering is perfectly fine.
Q. How much does it cost?
We offer courses ranging from ¥4,000 to ¥7,000 per person. The minimum order is ¥60,000. For example, for 4 guests, it works out to about ¥15,000 per person (with the ¥4,000 course). Think of it as an option for special occasions.
Q. Is it OK if there are children?
Yes. We can prepare kid-friendly options that don’t use raw fish — like egg sushi, cucumber rolls, and inari sushi. Just let us know in advance.
Q. What do I need to prepare?
Almost nothing. We bring all the tableware, tools, and ingredients. We arrive about an hour before the start to set up, and we handle cleanup after we’re done.
Q. Will you use my kitchen?
We only need to use your sink for water. We don’t need your stove or counter space.
Q. Can you accommodate allergies?
Yes. Just let us know in advance, and we’ll work around shellfish, certain fish, or other allergies as flexibly as possible.
Q. Do you come to areas outside Tokyo?
Transportation is included for anywhere within Tokyo’s 23 wards. Other areas may be possible — feel free to ask.
Be a Great Host AND Enjoy the Party
A home party should be a time for the host to enjoy too.
But in reality, you’re often so busy with prep and cooking that by the end, you’re the only one who’s exhausted.
Mobile sushi catering solves that problem.
For your guests: a special experience.
For you: the chance to actually be there and enjoy it.
If you’ve ever thought, “I want this home party to be different,” keep this as one of your options.
